Thanks to its strategic position, the city of Gloucester has a rich historic past stretching back to Roman times. Here you will find a wealth of attractions to visit and explore.

At it's heart in the beautiful setting College Green, stands the Norman Cathedral with its magnificent fan-vaulted cloisters and great east window. A walk down narrow cobbled streets and past ancient buildings leads into the main pedestrianised shopping area. From there it is just a short stroll to the dramatic waterfront of the Victorian Docks with it's impressive converted warehouses. You will be greeted by a colourful tableau of life on the water and all kinds of vessels, from narrow boats to sea going ships. There are also pleasure boats to take you on a journey through the past when Gloucester was a thriving commercial port.

Eating out

Gloucester is one of those exciting cities where fantastic history and modern world mesh together. Not only has it one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the UK but also a range of eating out establishments.

With an established Farmers Market every friday it is no wonder that a quiet revolution in food is taking place. The success of this is mostly down to the way the city embraces diversity and a multi-cultural society - living, working and relaxing side by side. There are a number of restaurants catering for truly global tastes, including the best of English, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, Thai and Indian cuisine.

Shopping in Gloucester is not only fun and full of pleasant surprises, but the city's main streets are laid out in a cross structure and are pedestrianised, which makes getting about both safe and easy. The main streets are wide and airy and are simply named Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate.

As well as all the usual high street stores that you would expect to find in any well known UK city, Gloucester also boasts a wide range of unique and fascinating specialist shops and boutiques which are ideal for browsing around and finding something unexpected and different.
